Cost-Benefit Analysis of Municipal Water Protection Measures: Environmental Benefits Versus Cost of Implementation

This cost-benefit analysis study was conducted within the CITYWATER project, which aimed to promote the implementation of water protection actions to improve the state of the local waters and the Baltic Sea. It consists of five case studies representing differing measures. The results show that investments in infrastructure such as wastewater treatment plants and port reception facilities, as well as in natural solutions such as stormwater wetland and agricultural buffer zones, result in significant reductions in nutrient loads.

Using the Ocean As a Tool for Global Economic Recovery

The ocean economy, which contributes upwards of $1.5 trillion in value added to the global economy, was particularly hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, with a projected loss of $1.9 billion for international shipping carriers alone. Coastal communities were hardest hit, with an estimated $7.4 billion fall in GDP across Small Island Developing States due to the decline in tourism.
