UN Environment & Open University Course - MOOC on Marine Litter

Starting on April 29 2019, UN Environment and Open University are offering a Massive Open Online Course on Marine Litter with a two-week Leadership Track and an eight-week Expert Track. The MOOC on marine litter strives to teach students through action-oriented learning how they can apply successful and inspiring activities to their own local context, regardless of their profession or location. The course will present different options and tools to combat marine pollution.

This paper, Addressing the Challenge of Marine Plastic Litter Using Circular Economy Methods, states the possible solution of dealing with the current marine plastics through implementing circular economy practices. This, in conjunction with optimizing landfill management, will help to substantially reduce the amount of those plastics most likely to end up as marine plastic litter.

It is based on a review of national legally-binding instruments that include bans and restrictions, taxes and levies, and waste management measures to enhance disposal, encourage reuse and recycling, and promote alternatives to plastic products.
