Ecosystem Service Valuation and Ecosystem Asset Account in Japan

This paper introduces Japan’s initiative of valuing ecosystem services and incorporates it into the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting - Experimental Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA-EEA). Specifically, it evaluates ecological stocks (i.e. forest and wetland) and ecosystem services from them based on economic valuations and develops an accounting system to record these values.

Temporal Scales, Ecosystem Dynamics, Stakeholders and the Valuation of Ecosystems Services

This paper provides a framework that can be used for analyzing temporal dimensions of ecosystem services. It presents a case study that analyses the supply of three ecosystem services in a Dutch national park, the Hoge Veluwe, over a time span of around a century as well as the implications of temporal scales for ecosystem services valuation and ecosystem management.

InVEST - Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem, Services and Tradeoffs

Natural Capital Project
InVEST is a suite of free, open-source software models used to map and value the goods and services from nature that sustain and fulfill human life. InVEST enables decision makers to assess quantified tradeoffs associated with alternative management choices and to identify areas where investment in natural capital can enhance human development and conservation. The toolset currently includes eighteen distinct ecosystem service models designed for terrestrial, freshwater, marine, and coastal ecosystems, as well as a number of “helper tools” to assist with locating and processing input data and with understanding and visualizing outputs.

ESAForD Video - Ecosystem Services Accounting for Development

Environment for Development Initiative (EfD)
The ESAForD project is a seven-country ecosystem service valuation project developed in collaboration with the Environment for Development (EfD) centers in Costa Rica, China, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, and Sweden. The project aims to contribute to the development of ecosystem service accounting by enhancing the knowledge and empirical experience around valuing ecosystem services.

This case study advocates for integrating the values of goods and services provided by forest ecosystems into policy making in Tunisia. For example, the study recommends combining forest conservation measures with compensation systems for income losses and creating a Forest Development Fund funded by a tax on products and services provided by forests.
