This Pilot-Study for the Analysis of the Environmental Impacts of Commodities Traded in Switzerland evaluates the environmental impacts of commodities traded by Swiss companies without being physically transported to Switzerland. Like this, they are excluded from foreign trade statistics or input-output analysis. With Switzerland trading 20-65% of global trade, depending on the commodity, this pilot-study closes this gap.

For the first time, a pilot study shows how many raw materials and other products are traded from Switzerland and how large the associated environmental impact is. It is almost nineteen times higher than the environmental impact of Switzerland's final consumption.

Mineral Resource Governance in the 21st Century: Gearing Extractive Industries Towards Sustainable Development

Decision-making in the extractive sector is shaped by a complex array of governance frameworks and initiatives operating along highly globalized mineral value chains. The report maps more than 80 existing international governance frameworks and initiatives which focus on delivering overlapping subsets of the 2030 Global Agenda for Sustainable Development, but do not currently operate in a sufficiently coordinated or integrated manner. In this context, the report calls for a new governance framework for the extractive sector referred to as the “Sustainable Development Licence to Operate” and including consensus-based principles, policy options and best practices that are compatible with the Sustainable Development Goals and other international policy commitments.
