The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Environmental Performance Review Programme assesses progress made by individual countries in reconciling their economic and social development with environmental protection, as well as in meeting international commitments on environment and sustainable development.
The Second Environmental Performance Review of Belarus details the progress made by Belarus in the management of its environment since the country was first reviewed in 1997, in particular in the implementation of the recommendations of the first review. It also covers eight issues of importance to Belarus, concerning policy-making, planning and implementation; the financing of environmental policies and projects; and the integration of environmental concerns in economic sectors and the promotion of sustainable development. Among the issues receiving special attention during the review were compliance and enforcement mechanisms; information, public participation and education; and environmental management in industry, energy, transport, agriculture and ecotourism.
