On 21 March 2018 (2:00 PM CET), the Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC) and Italian Society for Climate Sciences (SISC) held a webinar on "Adapting to Climate Change in Europe: Linking Knowledge, Policies and Practices".
Total reported economic losses resulting from extreme weather in the 33 European Environment and Observation Network (EIONET) member countries from 1980–2016 period amounted to about EUR 436 billion at 2016 Euro values. In future, extreme weather and climate related events are projected to increase in severity, duration and frequency. Combined with a quickly growing population, increasing wealth disparity, residential and commerial development in hazard-prone areas, and degradation of natural ecosystems will leave many regions in Europe more vulnerable and exposed.
This webinar presented a selection of cases drawn from the recent EEA report Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction in Europe wherein a degree of coherence between climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction efforts has been achieved, highlighting how research can support evidence-based and robust decision-making and guide policies and practices.
