On 30 April 2020 at 19:00 (CEST), the Climate Technology Centre & Network (CTCN) is hosting a webinar on 'Environmentally Sound Management of Waste'.
The COVID-19 pandemic is exacerbating the already growing waste management challenges in various cities and countries in West Asia. Improper treatment and disposal of healthcare waste poses serious harm to the environment and human health. The risk of disease transmission is higher due to exposures to infectious agents among waste pickers, waste workers, health workers, patients, and the community. Open burning and incineration without adequate pollution control will expose waste workers and the community to toxic contaminants in air emissions and ash.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Office for West Asia, in collaboration with the Climate Technology Centre and Network and the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), has organised this webinar to share information on the environmentally sound management of healthcare waste, with a focus on two modes of waste disposal: landfills and incineration. This webinar will support West Asian countries by offering new and innovative ideas to manage waste during the pandemic and re-enforcing best practice and policy. The webinar is aimed at national and city authorities responsible for waste management, but all are welcome.
