Climate Policy Initiative Webinar: Green Bonds in China. How are they performing?

On 10th and 11th of  June 2020, Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) is hosting a webinar on "Green Bonds in China. How are they performing?"

CONTENT

This webinar will provide research findings on Chinese green bond market completed by CPI and the International Institute of Green Finance (IIGF). Based on extensive primary data collection, the analysis accounts for USD 120 billion cumulative green bond issuance in China from 2016 to 2019, with rapid expansion over the last few years. The research shows that green bond proceeds are largely going to environmentally-relevant projects in China, but with varying degrees of disclosure at the project level. There is a lack of diversity in both issuers and investors, and market segmentation created by different authorities and regulatory frameworks impacts the efficiency and potential of the market.

OBJECTIVE

During this webinar there will be discussions on specific recommendations for ways to diversify the investor and issuer base, strengthen MRV, and create clearer guidelines and incentives for green bonds to support China’s economic goals.

PRESENTERS

• June Choi is an analyst at CPI who focuses on climate finance, mobilizing debt capital markets for climate solutions, and mainstreaming climate action within development finance institutions.
• Ying Cui is a Senior Research Fellow of the RCCEF (Research Center for Climate and Energy Finance) and is in charge of the Climate Finance Department and Carbon Finance Lab at the International Institute of Green Finance (IIGF).
• Donovan Escalante is a manager at CPI who focuses on addressing the need to mobilize private investment towards low-carbon, climate resilient growth in developing countries.
• Tom Heller is chairman of the Board and a Senior Strategic Advisor at CPI. He also serves as Director of Stanford University’s Sustainability Finance Initiative at the Precourt Energy Institute.
• Mathias Lund Larsen is the Director of International Cooperation at IIGF, as well as a Research Fellow at CUFE. His research focuses on relations between Chinese and international green finance, including within bonds, climate finance flows, and multilateral development bank cooperation.
• Yao Wang is the Director General of IIGF. She also serves as Deputy Secretary General of Green Finance Committee (GFC) of the China Society for Finance and Banking and as Secretary General of the Green Securities Committee (GSC) of the Securities Association of China.
