GGKP News
The GGKP has been selected to execute the Coordination, Communications and Knowledge Management (CCKM) project of the Global Environment Facility Implementing Sustainable Low and Non-Chemical Development in Small Island Developing States (GEF ISLANDS) Programme. The project is implemented by UNEP.
GEF ISLANDS supports 33 Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) across the Atlantic, Caribbean, Indian and Pacific regions to manage hazardous chemicals and waste safely and sustainably. The global CCKM project connects the regional projects, facilitating SIDS-SIDS learning through a dedicated knowledge hub and communities of practice on the Green Forum:
GEF ISLANDS Communities of Practice
“The GGKP is thrilled to support such an important initiative to protect small islands – some of the most culturally rich and biodiverse places on Earth,” said Ben Simmons, Head of the GGKP Secretariat. “The Green Forum offers an accessible space for globally widespread islands communities.”
“The GEF ISLANDS platform brings together all existing technical knowledge relevant to improved chemical and waste management in SIDS,” says Ludovic Bernaudat, Senior Task Manager in UNEP’s Chemicals and Health Branch and GEF Portfolio. “Ultimately, it will host a wealth of lessons learned and best practice developed under the Programme.”
GEF ISLANDS is part of a broader set of GEF initiatives to support the development of green and blue economy approaches in SIDS, including on disaster preparedness, integrated resource management and energy security.
The CCKM project is implemented by UNEP. Regional GEF ISLANDS projects are implemented by the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, InterAmerican Development Bank (IDB), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UNEP.
