In the context of the UNSG Climate Action Summit, Member States and financial institutions are invited to sign on to pledge to assess and monitor the climate impact and the alignment of their financial flows with the 1.5°C temperature goal of the Paris Agreement. Interested parties are invited to indicate their – even preliminary - interest in joining the pledge by 12 August 2019.

Today, at the Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund, Finance Ministers from more than twenty countries launched a new coalition aimed at driving stronger collective action on climate change and its impacts. The newly formed Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action endorsed a set of six common principles, known as the “Helsinki Principles,” that promote national climate action, especially through fiscal policy and the use of public finance.

The Social & Human Capital Protocol launched today in Geneva, Switzerland. It provides a consistent process to guide businesses as they assess their relationship with social and human capital. It offers an overarching framework for collaborative action to bring together different approaches for social and human capital measurement and valuation and is designed to be used alongside the Natural Capital Protocol to understand the full spectrum of business interactions with people, society and the environment.

A better understanding of how climate action can reinforce national sustainable development targets will improve political buy-in. The SDG Climate Action Nexus tool (SCAN-tool) provides high-level guidance on how climate actions can impact achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), covering actions across seven mitigation sectors: electricity and heat, transport, buildings, industry, waste, agriculture, and forestry.

New research from OECD, UN Environment and World Bank says serious and rapid investment in sustainable upgrades and alternatives is needed to limit climate change. The report finds that energy, transport, buildings and water infrastructure contribute more than 60 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2018, EfD will launch a new collaborative research program called Policy Instruments for Sustainable management of oceans and marine resources. The two focus areas of the program will be effective management of fisheries and combating marine pollution, the latter with a specific focus on plastic waste.
