An environmental scientist and accountant by training, Dr Joël Houdet is a Senior Research Fellow at the African Centre for Technology Studies (Johannesburg) and an IPBES expert. He undertakes research, capacity building, policy analysis and advisory work in the governance and management of Africa’s natural capital, biodiversity and ecosystem services, with a specific focus on extractive industries. Joël is also a director of a South African consultancy (Integrated Sustainability Services), the Head of Applied Research at Synergiz (Think Tank, Paris) and a member of IUCN's commissions on protected areas (WCPA) and ecosystem management (CEM). A Technical Group member of the WBCSD-led consortium in charge of drafting the Natural Capital Protocol, he has authored several publications, including two books “Integrating biodiversity into business strategies” and “The Biodiversity Footprint: A methodology to integrate nature into your accounting systems”.
