Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
UNEP, in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), serves as the joint host of the Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) Secretariat (www.greengrowthknowledge.org) on behalf of the GGKP founding organizations (UNEP, GGGI, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, and the World Bank).
The GGKP is a global network of 50 international organisations, research institutes, and think tanks focused on promoting a green economy transition by:
- identifying major knowledge gaps in green growth theory and practice and addressing these gaps through the promotion of collaboration and coordinated research; and
- using world-class knowledge management and communication tools to provide practitioners, policymakers, and other experts with opportunities to access, share, and utilize green growth policy analysis, guidance, information, and data.
A consultant is sought to provide the GGKP with general knowledge management support and to facilitate GGKP partnership engagement and development. In line with the Green Growth Knowledge Platform work programme and under the direct supervision of Mr. Benjamin Simmons, Head, UNEP/DTIE/ETB/GGKP, the consultant will be responsible for the following outputs:
- New green growth research, analysis, training courses, multimedia, online tools, projects and policies are reflected on the GGKP web platform (Indicator: at least 20 new knowledge resources added to the GGKP web platform per month);
- New knowledge sharing processes and mechanisms for the GGKP, including new and innovative outreach opportunities are identified, designed and implemented (Indicator: development of an updated knowledge sharing strategy);
- GGKP partner institutions maintain high visibility on the GGKP web platform (Indicator: at least 4 new blogs or news items featuring the work of GGKP partner institutions added to the web platform per month); and • New potential partner institutions, particularly from developing countries, are identified (Indicator: Four new knowledge partners from developing countries join the GGKP). Specific tasks and responsibilities (Cover all aspects of the work to be carried out) The consultant will assist the GGKP senior knowledge management officer in a wide range of knowledge management tasks, including: • Selecting regular ‘featured’ content to highlight on the GGKP homepage, resource library, and learning page;
- Ensuring consistency of categorization and tagging in the resource library;
- Helping to identify the latest green growth knowledge products, including those of GGKP partner institutions, in order to ensure that the platform is up-to-date in its offering;
- Ensuring timeliness of data, indicators, and other information presented;
- Working with web developers to fix bugs, carry out regular security updates, and helping coordinate the implementation of major web improvements;
- Assisting in the provision of technical support to the GGKP team in terms of training and access to email, web platform and other online tools used by the Secretariat;
- Identifying opportunities for increasing the effectiveness of knowledge management and knowledge sharing through innovative technological solutions (e.g. search engine optimization, adoption of new tools, etc.);
- Assisting in the development of quarterly analytics reports, including by gathering regular user feedback and monitoring the performance of the GGKP’s online activities (website, social media, and newsletter campaigns);
- Assisting in the preparation and production of GGKP reporting; • Supporting ongoing communication with GGKP partner institutions to ensure their active and ongoing engagement in GGKP activities;
- Maintaining links and exploring opportunities for collaboration with other knowledge management portals and platforms;
- Identifying opportunities for new partnerships, particularly within developing countries; and
- Identifying opportunities for increasing the effectiveness of partner engagement through innovative technological solutions.
Qualifications/special skills
Skills: Experience with innovative knowledge management, data management, and knowledge sharing tools; experience developing and delivering effective knowledge management and knowledge sharing programs within and between organizations; experience with online communications, including website content management systems (e.g. Drupal); experience building or supporting global partnerships.
Academic Qualifications: Master’s degree in knowledge management, information technology, international relations, economics, public policy, innovation, or related field. Experience: Two years of progressively responsible work experience in knowledge management, communications, partnership engagement, or economic policy. Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
