Working to mainstream green growth across development planning, the Government of Indonesia (GoI) and Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) have partnered to form the GoI-GGGI Green Growth Program. The program develop a systematic approach with tools and methodologies to support planning and investment decision making at the national, provincial and district level. By integrating green growth into the regional development planning process, the program allows each regional of the country to adapt green growth to their needs.
In particular, the program frames regional development into five dimensions of green growth:
- Sustainable economic growth with minimum environmental impact,
- Growth resilient against social, economic and environmental shocks,
- Inclusive and equitable growth that benefits everyone,
- Growth that sustains healthy and productive ecosystems, and
- Low-carbon growth that supports the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Through these dimensions, local government officials are encouraged to develop a common understanding on the best means to achieve green growth in their region. To test this participatory process, the GoI-GGGI Green Growth Program held an interactive and visually-oriented workshop in Murung Raya, a district in the remote headlands of Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Hosted by the Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda) and GGGI in March 2014, the workshop helped local stakeholders identify the benefits to be derived from advancing green growth. The workshop included the development of scenarios and encouraged stakeholders to support policies and incentives which can help protect biodiversity, forests and ecosystem services while boosting renewable, efficient sectors and environmentally friendly practices on the ground. The importance of collaborating across sectors and the economic, social and environmental disciplines in order to take on a more holistic approach in planning and investment decision making was highlighted amongst the different heads of agencies.
Due to the success of the workshop in building up a shared vision for green growth, the program is encouraging similar workshops in other areas. More information on the workshop and its outcomes can be found in the video below.
