The Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) held its second Regional Practitioners’ Workshop on Green Growth in Africa, in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, 2-3 April 2014. The Workshop on Green Growth in Africa, “Pathways to Green Growth in Africa” aimed at (1) exploring the rationale for green(er) growth in an African context, (2) facilitating policy dialogue and knowledge sharing which will help guide policy-makers in Africa and (3) moving the dialogue on to practical implementation issues. The focus was on setting a vision for green growth in Africa through thematic sessions on matters of relevance to the region. The workshop was hosted by the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), organized by the World Bank and designed and executed in collaboration with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The workshop benefited from additional funding from the LEDS Global Partnership (LEDS GP) and PROFOR (Program on Forests).
The GGKP workshop followed the Africa LEDS Partnership regional workshop 1 April 2014. This platform served as a hub for peer-to-peer exchange and learning, training, and coordination of programs and assistance in Africa. The workshop brought together low emission development leaders from countries throughout Africa and from international programs to identify and plan priority activities for peer learning, in-depth training, technical collaboration, and coordination for low emission development activities in the region. The Workshop was hosted by the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and organized by the LEDS GP and World Bank, with additional funding from the Climate Development and Knowledge Network (CDKN).

GGKP REGIONAL PRACTITIONERS’ WORKSHOP | Pathways to Green Growth in Africa
Day 2 – Wednesday 2 April 2014: Green Growth Landscape in Africa
Day 2 opened the discussion on key issues while focusing on exploring the concept of Green Growth in an African context and showcasing its relevance for the region. The second part of the day focused on the specific challenges faced by African countries, particularly in regards to high dependence on natural resources as an engine of growth and the rapid pace of infrastructure development in the region, through three overarching and thematic issues: renewable energy, greening infrastructure, and natural resources management.
Day 3 – Thursday 3 April 2014: Green Growth in Practice
The first half of Day 3 started with discussions on forest-friendly growth in the Congo Basin and included a presentation of the UNEP study that models a “Green Economy vs. Business as Usual” scenario for DRC. Participants had the opportunity to gain insights into the variety of green growth experiences and seek guidance on particular regional and local challenges. The second half of Day 3 was dedicated to parallel sessions in which participants had the opportunity to choose from a wide range of topics. These sessions were smaller, facilitating more exchange and opportunities to highlight areas for future collaboration.
