On 7-8 June 2018, the Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) are holding an Expert Workshop: Measuring Green Growth Opportunities and Country Performance in Geneva, Switzerland.
This workshop builds on the work of GGGI, the United Nations Environmental Programme (UN Environment) and the GGKP Metrics and Indicators Working Group. In the 2016 GGKP report “Measuring Inclusive Green Growth at the Country Level”, the GGKP Metrics and Indicators Working Group identified five main themes for measuring green growth: (i) natural assets underpinning economic activities, (ii) natural resource efficiency, (iii) socioeconomic resilience to ecological risks, (iv) economic opportunities related to environmental policies, and (v) inclusiveness of environmental policies.
Two GGKP founding partners – GGGI and UN Environment – have taken up efforts to fill these gaps in measuring green growth country performance. GGGI has developed the Green Growth Index and Simulation Tool, which are two complementary approaches to measuring country performance in green growth. UN Environment has developed the Green Economy Index. Moreover, the OECD has recently published its updated dashboard of Green Growth Indicators (2017). Finally, the GGKP working group has focused on identifying and developing indicators for measuring economic opportunities.
The workshop aims to explore knowledge gaps and solutions for measuring green growth performance at the national level. It will thoroughly explore GGGI’s efforts to fill the knowledge gaps identified in the 2016 GGKP report and compare and contrast them with UN Environment’s related efforts. Finally, the GGKP Metrics and Indicators Working Group will determine next steps for catalysing an expanded research agenda for quantifying economic opportunities in green growth. The workshop is divided into two parts over two days:
- In Part 1, participants will assess, compare and contrast means for measuring green growth country performance, particularly GGGI’s Green Growth Index and UN Environment’s Green Economy Index, including related ranking methods and simulation tools;
- In Part 2, participants will evaluate available and missing indicators for measuring green growth opportunities like employment, trade, investment and innovation with the GGKP working group.
This workshop, like the working group, is established under the GGKP collaborative approach to research, which provides a regular, neutral and inter-institutional space for achieving collective action on metrics and green growth. All discussions will be held under the Chatham House Rule.
