Eva Grambye, Special Envoy for the Global Green Growth Forum, talks about the exciting progress in the preparations for the third annual Global Green Growth Forum, taking place in Copenhagen October 21-22 2013.
At the Secretariat for the Global Green Growth Forum we are now in the final and very hectic phase of preparation for the high-level forum meeting in October. Throughout the year we have worked closely with our partners and the organisers of our many public-private partnerships that will be featured at this year’s 3GF. The work of 3GF is a continuous process of accelerating green growth but our annual forum represents all this work coming together.
At 3GF 2013 we have gathered a select group of global green growth leaders – from governments and cities, business and finance, leading experts, international organizations and civil society - to explore and demonstrate how the transition to long-term sustainable green growth can be achieved at scale and speed.
This reflects the increased acknowledgement amongst governments and business leaders that improving resource efficiency and greening the value chain can bring about major growth opportunities, generate new markets and jobs as well as promote social and environmental benefits. At the upcoming 3GF business leaders who increasingly recognize that going green is a viable, and even necessary business model, will meet and engage in discussions on how to further develop and use this model.
It is important for us here at 3GF that the forum cannot be a mere talk-shop; it must be a place of action. The world needs a major industrial transition if it is expected to meet the needs of 9 billion people by 2050. The creation of new paradigms and models of growth can help change mind-sets in order to balance the short-term gains and the long-term sustainability of the global economy. This includes working with value chains to use and reuse resources more efficiently and more sustainably.
A value chain approach is at the heart of the way we work at this year’s 3GF where our overall theme is “Improving resource efficiencies in the value chain”. In order to improve the efficient use of resources and minimise the negative impact on sustainability, we need to look at the entire life cycle of a product or a process. The focus is on how to ensure sustainable and efficient use of resources whilst minimizing, or even better reusing waste.
The 3GF way of doing this is by using public-private partnerships (PPPs) as drivers of green growth. PPPs are the basis of 3GF’s work. We believe these partnerships are instrumental in accelerating the transition to an inclusive green economy. 3GF helps identify, promote and launch PPPs that have a particular potential for achieving speed-to-scale across borders.
Business as usual is no longer an option and the aim of 3GF 2013 is to deliver concrete actions, commitments and recommendations for the transition to long-term sustainable green growth achieved at scale and speed.
I look very much forward to the third 3GF next week.
